Mariana,
I developed a method to differentiate between mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus)
and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) for my Ph.D. dissertation. I
used logistic regression to develop formulas for determining species.
Logistic regression works best if you only have two possible outcomes. If you
want more information on my work feel free to contact me or see my preliminary
work in:
Jacobson, Jodi A. 2003. Identification of Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and
White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) Postcranial Remains as a Means of
Determining Human Subsistence Strategies. Plains Anthropologist
48(187):287-297.
or the finished version with more elements and a larger sample size included
in:
Jacobson, Jodi A. 2004. Determining Human Ecology on the Plains through the
Identification of Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and White-tailed Deer
(Odocoileus virginianus) Postcranial Material. Ph.D. dissertation. University
of Tennessee, University Microfilms, Ann Arbor, Michigan
Sincerely,
Jodi
