I am pleased to announce the publication of issue 18 of Internet Archaeology
http://intarch.ac.uk/journal/issue18/index.html
The first article in this issue is by Peter Dawson and Richard Levy. They
combine archaeology and anthropology with 3D computer reconstructions to
explore semi-subterranean Thule winter houses during the 12th and 13th
centuries in the Canadian Arctic. The Thule used whale bone extensively in
the construction of their houses and the authors use reconstructions and
ethnographic observation to suggest the ritual and symbolism of their
architecture (with animated reconstructions).
The rest of the issue is dedicated to the Archaeological Records of Europe:
Networked Access project. ARENA was a three year project supported by the
European Union through the Culture 2000 programme. The object of the
project was to promote preservation and access to digital data in European
archaeology and to investigate and demonstrate the possibility of creating
a European information infrastructure for archaeology. As well as issues
such as archiving, technology and dissemination, the articles discuss the
many challenges faced by each of the project partners from Romania, Norway,
Iceland, Denmark, Poland and UK, not least, identity, language, and how to
share data across national boundaries.
Issue 18 and indeed most of issue 17 has been the work of Jon Kenny while I
have been on maternity leave. I would like to take this opportunity to
thank Jon for all his work on Internet Archaeology and wish him all the
best in the future.
Judith
