The School of History and Archaeology regrets to announce the death of
Professor John G Evans. John, who joined the Cardiff Archaeology Department in
1970 and took early retirement in 2002, died suddenly on Tuesday after a short
illness. He was a formative figure in the development of archaeology at Cardiff
and one of the most influential environmental archaeologists of his
generation, producing his pioneering text book 'An Introduction to Environmental
Archaeology' in 1978.
John had a profound effect on more than three decades of Cardiff students, and
helped to train new generations of environmental archaeologists. His
enthusiasm, knowledge and innovative contributions to our discipline will be
sorely missed in the department and in the wider archaeological community.
His friend and collaborator, Terry O'Connor writes 'John was an influential
figure as an environmental archaeologist and prehistorian, and an old-fashioned
field naturalist to whom nothing was less than interesting, and many things were
a source of fascination and wonder. Working with John was seldom predictable,
often exhausting, but always stimulating and mind-broadening. His interest in,
and concern for, his friends, their families and their pets was warm and
genuine, and many of us will miss a good friend and colleague'.
Vivan, his wife, has asked us to forward these details of his funeral.
'The funeral will be held on the 28th of June, at 2.15 p.m., at the Thornhill
Crematorium in Cardiff. There will be an informal reception afterwards, with
tea, coffee, sandwiches etc. This funeral is as much for John's friends and
colleagues as for his family, so everybody will be most welcome'.
Yours
Jacqui Mulville
