Eel fisheries were at least locally quite important to Australian
aborigines. In western Victoria (e g at Toolondo) there are large systems
of artificial channels connecting lakes and swamps to canalize eel
movements which may be the largest construction projects ever undertaken by
aborigines. It has been argued that this area supported a semi-sedentary
population which would to some extent be similar to the Northwest Coast
Indians.
