Over 6,300 design-related images have been added to the AHDS Visual Arts
database.
A representative sample of 2,800 images from the Design Council Slide
Collection were digitised as part of the JISC Image Digitisation Initiative
(JIDI) in 1997-99. Now over 6,300 further images have been deposited with
AHDS Visual Arts as a result of a cataloguing and digitisation project
funded by the Research Support Libraries Programme (RSLP).
The images form part of the recently expanded Design Council Slide
Collection and feature many aspects of British design from 1945 to1990 but
there are also many images illustrating design from other countries and from
earlier periods. The majority of images show products of various kinds
(including tableware, furniture, lighting, toys, domestic appliances,
textiles, wallpapers, office equipment, engineering components and
machinery), as well as other areas of design such as architecture, town
planning, interior design, graphic design and corporate identity.
The resource also contains a large number of original and unique images that
directly record many of the Design Council's own activities, including its
annual design award scheme introduced in 1957, and various exhibitions and
events that it organised or contributed to in the UK and abroad such as the
‘Festival of Britain’ and ‘Britain Can Make It’ exhibitions.
