AHDS Visual Arts collection complements major new retrospective at the IWM

A major new retrospective showcasing the work of William Orpen has recently
opened at the Imperial War Museum. The Sunday Times has hailed the show a
success and Orpen “a surrealist ahead of his time”.

Over 100 images of William Open’s work, including many of the paintings in
the IWM’s exhibition, are available, fully catalogued, to view via AHDS
Visual Arts. The works form part of the Imperial War Museum’s Concise Art
Collection and date from 1917 – 1919 when Orpen served as an Official War
Artist in France. Some of the subjects Orpen chose to paint included
portraits of officers and soldiers, landscapes of the aftermath of battle,
the horrors of war and the peace process.

William Orpen’s work sits alongside other famous Great War artists of the
time including Paul Nash, C.R.W. Nevinson, Stanley Spencer, Augustus John
and John Singer Sargent.

To browse the William Orpen images and the full Imperial War Museum Concise
Art Collection, simply log on to http://vads.ahds.ac.uk . If you have not
visited the AHDS Visual Arts website before, we very kindly ask that you
fill in a short registration form which will allow you to access over 35,000
visual arts images. All AHDS Visual Arts images are free for use in
research, learning and teaching.
