Late at night so I did not have the chance to read the TLR article, but the
second, on "mat" and its gross references to body parts and what one can do
with one's (anyone's) mother...actually, this reminds me of the Russian
comedian Yaakov Smirnoff and a story he told on NPR years ago about his
early days in this country. Armed only with his schoolroom version of
English--fluent but unidiomatic--a friend took him to see an American
stand-up comic, Richard Pryor. After listening for awhile Smirnoff turned
to his host and said "What a soulful man! Every other word, he mentions
his mother." The friend then explained via a Russian equivalent what Prior
was actually saying.
