You're right -- indeed probably lots of possible morals to it.
Oddly (or perhaps not) I was first told that joke by a Jesuit priest who was
a friend of my father's, who was a Church of Scotland Minster. (My father,
that was, not the Jesuit.)
It struck me at the time that the way he told the joke, the religious figure
was simply a priest rather than a Jesuit priest, which I thought would have
made it even funnier. (Well, at least he didn't make him a minister, not
even Wee Free.) Showing that there are limits to anyone's tolerance.
