Sounds like Equipoise, which Wordsworth noted and envied in certain pedlars
and leech-gatherers, rather as a quality developed through years of
suffering, witness of suffering, and introspection amidst the permanent
forms of nature.
'He could afford to suffer with those whom he saw suffer'
The then stable climate of the Lake District may be a prerequisite. Aldous
Huxley in an essay 'Wordsworth in the Tropics' suggests that only in
temperate climes can romanticism flourish.
So a shortcut via pharmacology would be welcomed.
But surely under other names such drugs are already available.
Side-effects?
'Cured, I am frizzled, stale and small.'
