Fame. Ah me. Deborah Harry, the lead singer of a '70s group called
Blondie, called fame a pain in the ass. But she was famous at the
time. Maybe "at the time" is the key: she had enough sense to know that
nothing lasts.
Tony Curtis learned it the hard way. After huge professional success in
the 1950s and '60s, he disappeared into the wonderful world of alcohol
and cocaine. When he reemerged much later, he said movie stars really
had two professions: acting and Being Famous. Most knew at least a bit
about the first; but no drama school or coach prepares you for how to
handle the second. The same could be said for far too many professional
athletes.
