Hello,
Interesting topic. Doing my PhD, looking at the sense of touch when people
interact with products, I struggle with the same types of questions myself.
I recently became aware of John Zeisel’s “Inquiry by Design – Tools for
environment-behaviour research”. The book focusing on
environmental-behaviour research, which is in itself interesting to
interaction design. What seems to be even more interesting is its focus on
the relationship between research and design.
One important claim by Zeisel is the notion of two types of information:
“Information used in designing tends to be useful in two ways: as a
heuristic catalyst for imaging and as a body of knowledge for testing”.
The book is first published in 1981, but I see on Amazon that there will be
a new edition in January 2006.
