Dear Fil,
You recently asked:
"Has anyone surveyed industry to find out what *exactly* they're
'grumbling about'?"
I'll refer you, for the moment, to Peter L. Phillips's recent
publication entitled: "Creating the Perfect Design Brief: How to
Manage Design for Strategic Advantage", pp. 82-86. Allworth Press,
NY., and Design Management Institute, 2004.
"They" are - more and more - grumbling about the lack, not
of "design" service providers", but rather, in Phillips words,
of "equal partners". That is, shrewed "proactive" (=Explorers?
Researchers?) in devising practical solutions to ALL "their"
problems, whichever these may be: organizational, production related,
societal, etc. And this is what is currently asked to Design teaching
institutions. To, for instance, enhance their design teaching
curricula with the newly advocated approach of "Service-Learning"
(See Prof. Tom Ehrlich, in the July issue of " Carnegie Perspectives"
