Perhaps there is a case for looking at the design process as a part of the social structuration process(Giddens) - something which has an evolutionary and a biological counterpart evident in the behaviour of the social insects, and also in the design of distributed, autonomous systems that appear to develop structure.
(ie design as the vehicle for what sociotechnical systems researchers call 'social shaping')

Oliver,
I have in my PhD thesis (which will be defended on Monday) investigated use-quality criteria of and design patterns for computer applications used in a studio environment. The studio was one of my three cases of sociable situations of use.

Oliver,
I have in my PhD thesis (which will be defended on Monday) investigated use-quality criteria of and design patterns for computer applications used in a studio environment. The studio was one of my three cases of sociable situations of use. I am also, together with Henrik Artman at KTH in Stockholm, working on an article on the subject, but it is still only a manuscript.
In my analysis of the studio I specifically look at the communicative and social aspects of creative work. I the identify desirable use qualities of systems used in the setting and the phrase them as design objectives clarified in an objectives tree. Finally I look at what character the systems-in-use should have, and draw the conclusion that systems in sociable use need to display a dynamic character (they swiftly change between being resouorces, common resources and tools). I also present some design patterns for how to reach a dynamic character.
You can find my thesis at Linköping University Electronic Press:

You would probably be interested in (parts of) chapters 4, 5 and 6. And if you are interested in the method of Use Quality Analysis chapter 3 can be intersting as well as chapter 7 and 8.
Cheers,
