Requiring staff to use annual leave to make up time during a phased
return is illogical. One of a phased rehab programmes purposes is to get
staff back earlier. If the company waited until the member of staff was
fit to immediately commence full-time working, then the person would
still be off on certified, accepted-as-valid sick leave. A part-time
phased return is a gain to the company, not a loss.

Subject: Phrased return to work
When advising a phrased return to work are staff expected to use annual
leave to make up the time? Is anyone aware of any research material
around this? We are trying to convince the Trust that this may not be
the most cost effective way. Any help would be gratefully received.
Thank you
