You are invited to join us for a musical seminar:
"THE HORNPIPE: The Dance with a Certain Jaunty Something"
For many hundreds of years the hornpipe has occupied a small but
significant corner in the music and dance culture of the British Isles.
From Chaucer, through Shakespeare, down to the "Sailor's Hornpipe" and
"Captain Pugwash". It is an inviting object of study, but surprisingly
little work has been done on it.
This seminar is the second of an occasional series hosted by the Cambridge
University Ceilidh Band.
We shall examine the history and origins of the hornpipe; its popular and
regional varieties; dance techniques; and instrumental performance
techniques.
It will take place in the New Theatre, Christ's College, Cambridge, from
2.00pm to 4.00pm on Saturday 12 November.
The seminar will be led by PETE COOPER [of the London Fiddle School],
and introduced for CUCB by ED EMERY
The event is open to all interested parties. Just turn up on the day.
Non-musicians are welcome.
Admission is free - but we'll take a whip-round for incidental expenses.
