The Ramsay Trustees will in February 2006 consider applications for the
award of one or more General (British) Ramsay Memorial Fellowships,
which may be co-sponsored by a British industrial or other body.
The Fellowship(s) will normally be tenable in the United Kingdom for two
years from 1 October 2006. Candidates will generally be expected to have
had already some postdoctoral experience of research, although this
should normally not have exceeded two years. The value of a Fellowship
is usually comparable with the lower part of the Lecturers' salary scale
for British universities, to which may be added a grant for (non-travel)
expenses of up to £1,000 per annum. In addition, USS or similar
superannuation arrangements may be made.
Full details of the eligibility criteria and the conditions of the
Fellowships are attached.
Application forms are available from the Executive Secretary, Ramsay
Memorial Fellowships Trust, c/o Academic Services, University College
London, 5 Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT, UK; telephone (0207) 679 5775;
fax (0207) 679 5789; email [log in to unmask]
Completed application forms must be received by no later than 15
November 2005.
Many thanks

RAMSAY MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIPS TRUST
RAMSAY MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIPS
FOR CHEMICAL RESEARCH:
GENERAL (BRITISH) FELLOWSHIPS (POSTDOCTORAL)
Introduction
1. The Ramsay Memorial Fellowships were instituted in 1920 as one part
of the memorial to Sir William Ramsay (1852-1916), Professor of
Inorganic and General Chemistry at University College London, the first
to discover or isolate argon, helium, neon, krypton and xenon and
Britain's first Nobel Prizewinner in any subject.
2. Fellowships are awarded only to advanced students of chemical
research who have shown outstanding merit, to pursue their work in
Universities or other places of academic research in the United Kingdom.
The award of a Ramsay Fellowship is regarded as one of high
international distinction. Among chemists in the British Commonwealth
the Ramsay Fellowships have a unique status.
3. During the tenure of their Fellowships the Ramsay Fellows have the
benefit, as occasion arises, of the advice of members of the Ramsay
Advisory Council. The interest of the Trust in its Fellows continues
after their Fellowships expire. They have the opportunity annually of
meeting each other at a dinner given in their honour by the Provost of
University College London. Thus the Ramsay Fellows remain members of a
fellowship in the wider sense.
4. The title of Ramsay Fellow is one which Fellows should feel proud to
hold, not only during the tenure of their Fellowship, but also in later
years when they take part in any gathering of chemists of the highest
international standing.
Eligibility, Regulations and Other Conditions
5. Candidates may be of either sex who, preferably, have been born
within the Commonwealth and have graduated with distinction in chemistry
in a University within the Commonwealth. In exceptional cases, the
Trustees may award a Fellowship to a candidate whose academic
distinction has been gained outside the Commonwealth.
6. Candidates will be expected to have had a training in research
leading to the possession of a PhD, preferably of a British University
or its equivalent, and to show evidence of their ability to initiate and
pursue a programme of independent research. Candidates cannot be
considered unless they have submitted their PhD thesis by the 31
December following the deadline for receipt of applications. Great
emphasis is placed by the Advisory Council on both the quality and the
originality of the research proposed. The Advisory Council also
attaches special importance to evidence of mobility, either at pre- or
post-doctoral level, or in the selection of the candidate's proposed
place of work.
7. There is an upper age limit for applicants of 35.
8. An award of a Fellowship will be based upon a proposal by a candidate
to do specified work at a specified place, both to be approved by the
Advisory Council. With the approval of the latter, the specified place
may be varied from time to time. Generally, it will be a University or
other place of academic research within the United Kingdom but, on the
recommendation of the Advisory Council, exceptionally may be outside the
United Kingdom. The Advisory Council will look particularly favourably
on applicants proposing to undertake their studies within the 5*-rated
Department of Chemistry at UCL.
9. A Fellowship will normally be tenable for a period of two years, from
1 October in the year of award. In special circumstances, and with the
approval of the Advisory Council, the beginning of the tenure may be
deferred. In exceptional cases, the Trustees may extend the Fellowship
for up to but not more than a third year.
10. The stipend of the Fellowship will normally be in step with the
lower part of the Lecturer scale for British Universities, with one
increment for the second year. The starting point of the stipend will be
dependent upon the experience and qualifications of the candidate. A
grant, not exceeding £1,000 per annum, may be added to this sum for
(non-travel) expenses which can be shown to be essential to the research
undertaken. In addition, superannuation under the Universities'
Superannuation Scheme (USS) or on a similar basis may be arranged: under
this the Fellow contributes 6.35% of his or her salary and the Trust a
sum equal to 14%. The net emoluments will be paid monthly in arrears
through the payroll of University College London or the Fellow's host
institution, as appropriate.
11. A Fellowship may be either fully funded by the Trust or co-sponsored
and jointly funded by an industrial company or other body approved by
the Trustees.
12. A Fellowship is intended to enable the holder to devote him- or
herself full time to research. However, the Trustees wish to encourage
holders of Ramsay Fellowships to undertake a small amount of teaching
work, not exceeding on average three hours a week, of which not more
than one hour should be occupied in actual lecturing.
13. Towards the end of each Session, a Fellow will be required to submit
for the approval of the Advisory Council a report on the research
carried out with the aid of the Fellowship. Fellows must give due
acknowledgement to the Ramsay Memorial Fellowships Trust (and any
co-sponsoring body) in any papers published giving the results of this work.
14. Ramsay Fellows will be encouraged, during the tenure of their
Fellowship, to explore opportunities to give a lecture or seminar at a
University within the City of Glasgow under the Chairmanship of a
Professor of Chemistry at that University. Funding will be made
available for this purpose.
15. No other Fellowship, Studentship or Scholarship may be held during
the tenure of a Ramsay Memorial Fellowship, nor may any paid work be
undertaken by a Fellow without the specific permission of the Trustees.
16. In no circumstances shall any candidate have any claim, otherwise
than an award actually made, upon any Fund of the Foundation or upon the
Trustees or Advisory Council, or upon any Trustee or any member of the
Advisory Council, in respect of anything spoken or written in relation
to his or her candidature, or of any report made or not made, or
decision come to or not come to, whether or not in accordance with the
regulations for the time being.
Applications
17. Applications for a British Ramsay Memorial Fellowship should be made
on the prescribed application form and returned by post to the Executive
Secretary, Ramsay Memorial Fellowships Trust, University College London,
Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT, UK, to arrive not later than 15 November
of the year before the award.
18. Applications will be considered by the Ramsay Trustees and Advisory
Council and candidates will be notified in due course of their decision.
