A new design for COMPASS
The British Museum’s collections online
www.thebritishmuseum.ac.uk/compass
The British Museum is proud to announce the launch of the new look COMPASS.
While it is updated with new objects and tours every month, this is the
first major change to the design and layout of the COMPASS site since
launch in June 2000.
1) A new ‘look-and-feel’
The new design brings the site closer to children’s COMPASS (launched 2002)
and the Museum’s branding. The design is much cleaner and fresher, and
introduces a bold use of colour in the page layout to help navigation.
2) A new Home
The new home page has many more links, providing more points of access to
objects, and tours, making it more accessible to those who may not be
familiar with the collections.
3) A new Tours page
The site was first launched with only two online tours. Now with around
sixty, we’ve re-designed the page to display them in geographical regions,
following the zoning of the physical Museum.
4) Improved layout for tours
The tree-structure tours are much easier to navigate, with less scrolling.
5) Index Search
Previously the main way in to the site was by user searches. Now visitors
can also browse the indexes, which means those less familiar with the
collections or without a particular aim to their visit are more likely to
find something of interest.
