I suppose Tony is right - well, in theory at least. But I can't help thinking Fiona's idea of a monthly email is a good one. Frequent emails can be counter-productive; my reaction tends to be "Oh <expletive>, it's X again! DELETE!" This isn't really fair, of course, but it's understandable.
Then there is junk on snailmail, especially publishers' announcements five or six times over, which means much of it gets chucked on sight.
Yours grumpily

We're all allowed to be grumpy - especially if we're doing work and
professional emails at the weekend - but yes I think you are being a little
grumpy here (speaking as a founder member of the Grumpy Old Git Guild of
Library Elders).
Certainly Cilip do send round a lot of old junk about their courses,
breaking the etiquette about advertising that most of us with stuff to sell
are careful to observe. They shouldn't do it, of course, but the messages
don't contain graphics and they do always signal the content in the Subject
line so you can delete them unread in a couple seconds and get on with the
serious business of helping beleaguered Nigerians get their money out of
Liberia and spending our commission making changes to our own anatomy.
Even my free Hotmail account now gives me 250Mb of space, so the "filling
up" is more aesthetic than real. If you want to see an email list filled
with clutter you should spend a day or two on medlib-l!

Subject: CILIP workshop emails
Just checking if I'm being a 'grumpy old woman' or if its an issue for other
people...
Personally, I get still get so swamped in spam and other email that I get
very protective of my in-box (Yes, the IT person does block some spam, but a
lot get thru). So it would suit me better if we got something like one
monthly email from CILIP about all the courses they want to publicise at the
time, with more use of links to the fuller info on their website.
But before I do an email to them about that, I wanted to check if there are
folk about there who value the current method. Please send any replies to
me, not the list (I dont want this filling up other peoples' inboxes!
