News from UKeiG: 11th day of March 2005:
Searching the Internet - UKeiG Event in Belfast
Let's be honest - most of us head straight for Google when we want
to search the Internet. But Google isn't the only search engine and
all too often we would be better off taking a completely different
approach. The aim of this workshop present by the UK eInformation
Group is to provide delegates with an essential toolkit to help them
search more effectively and will include key search tools, tips and
techniques.
Those who attended the previous presentation of this event in
Newcastle in 2004 were energised by the content and day. Some
comments included: “A really useful seminar – well worth a day
away from the office” and “Great refresher course plus new
materials”
Topics to be covered include;
.different types of search tools and how they work
·virtual libraries, evaluated listings, portals,
·what the search engines miss - the "invisible web"
·making the most of Google
·alternatives to Google
·advanced search techniques
·meta-search tools and software
·tracking down pages that have disappeared
·assessing the quality of the information that you find
·Top 10 search tips
A significant part of the day will be taken up with practical sessions.
The course presenter Karen Blakeman has worked in the information
profession for over twenty years and has been a freelance consultant
since 1989. Her company (RBA Information Services) provides
training and consultancy on the use of the Internet, and on accessing
and managing information resources.
