Assistant Librarian – Head of Western Manuscripts
Academic-Related Grade 4 Salary Scale: £33,646 - £40,287 p.a.
Applications are invited for this established post, to act as Head of the
Department of Western Manuscripts within the Department of Special
Collections. The duties of the post will include: leading the Department of
Western Manuscripts, taking responsibility for the UK’s second largest
collection of manuscripts, and associated services, through the Keeper of
Special Collections; managing and leading staff, devising and implementing
projects, and developing the human resources of the Department; playing a
major role in the development and promotion of the manuscript collections;
overseeing the development of cataloguing of the manuscript collections;
assisting in fund-raising, particularly for acquisitions, including making
grant applications; contributing to the development of policy and strategy
of the Department in all areas; ensuring the provision of high quality
services for researchers and developing good liaison with academic staff and
other library readers within the University, in collaboration with the Head
of Research Support.
Applications are invited from those who have: a professional archival or
library qualification; an honours degree; extensive experience of working in
a research library or archive and of working with archives or manuscript
collections; up to date knowledge of current issues and developments in the
profession; a close familiarity with and commitment to, the world of
scholarship and research, particularly in higher education.
The postholder will be expected to lead and motivate staff; plan, organise
and develop work to achieve agreed objectives; delegate tasks appropriately
and support their successful completion; supervise staff and handle
personnel issues promptly and appropriately; understand and apply procedures
for control of resources.
The person appointed will develop the services of the Department; encourage
the Department to constantly improve the quality of its services and
collections; deal confidently and tactfully with people at all levels within
the University and the wider community and communicate clearly at all
levels; contribute to management discussions and decision making; analyse
issues and identify action to be taken; examine critically existing
policies/procedures and suggest more effective methods; identify obstacles
to change and plan accordingly.
An informed sympathy with the aims of library support for teaching, learning
and research in a major academic institution, and a commitment to the
provision of integrated library services, and knowledge of additional
European languages would be advantages.
