Bodleian Library
Department of Special Collections and Western Manuscripts
Project Officer (ARTstor Project)
18 Month fixed term contract
Academic Related Staff Grade 1: Salary £20,044 - £22,289 p.a.
The Bodleian Library has recently signed an agreement with ARTstor Inc.
of
New York for the digitization of over 20,000 slides and filmstrips of
medieval and renaissance illuminated manuscripts in the Bodleian's
outstanding collection. The post-holder, based on the central Bodleian
site,
will assess the standard of the existing image descriptions, will
improve
them where necessary, and will create new descriptions in cases where
they
are lacking. The work will be carried out by reference both to the
images
themselves and to modern catalogues: much of it will involve updating
attributions of the place and date of production of the manuscripts.
Applications are invited from art historians, or others possessing
expertise
in the field of medieval and renaissance manuscripts and their
illumination.
The post-holder will have an honours degree or equivalent; familiarity
with
manuscript catalogues; a working knowledge of Latin; confidence in
working
with electronic images and data; and the ability to work independently.
The
project has a strict timetable, and the ability to organize work in
order to
meet deadlines will be important. A postgraduate qualification in
medieval
or renaissance history or art history, and a working knowledge of modern
European languages, especially French and German, will be advantageous.
The
appointment will be for a fixed period of 18 months.
