The highly successful summer exhibition 'A New Flowering: 1000 Years of
Botanical Art' at Oxford's Ashmolean Museum closes on 11 Sept. There is
still time to book for the Aslib Biosciences Group's visit on Wed 7
September at 2.15pm - don't miss this opportunity to see some of the
finest examples of botanical art in the world!
The exhibition shows examples from Shirley Sherwood's private collection
of the works of contemporary botanical artists alongside illustrations
from historic taxonomic works in the collections of Oxford libraries. It
has been very well reviewed in the national press and in Nature (23 June
2005, pp1030-1031). For further details see
http://www.ashmol.ox.ac.uk/ash/exhibitions/exh075.html.
The visit will offer an opportunity to hear about the purpose and
importance of botanical illustration, the work of a botanical artist
today, and Oxford's work in digitizing one of the most famous examples of
botanical art, Sibthorp and Smith's Flora Graeca, several volumes of which
are on display.
Following refreshments there will be opportunity to view the exhibition at
your own pace with staff on hand to answer your questions. A lavishly
illustrated catalogue is available from the museum shop for £20.
If you would like to go, please e-mail [log in to unmask] by the
evening of Tues 6 Sept. The meeting will begin in the Headley Lecture
Theatre, in the basement next to the cafe. For location of the museum see
http://www.ashmol.ox.ac.uk/ash/introduction/. A charge of £5 will be made
for this visit, payable on the day.
