Hello,
I recently submitted a request to the list, for information about
computer software. I got lots of Out of Office Replies and a couple of
other messages expressing interest, but nothing that really answered my
problem.
However, since then I have given the matter some thought and have
devised a simple method to handle and record submitted assignments,
using our LMS.
We use Autolib, but this should work with most systems, although you may
need to modify some bits.
It would work like this:
* *When a student hands in an assignment, the appropriate
Autolib record can be brought up.
* *Using the Special issue feature, the students name and
Learner number are entered.
* *A due date for the end of the academic year is entered to
avoid overdues being generated.
* *Then click on issue and the details are added to the borrower
loans and a unique number is generated which can be given to the student
on a written receipt.
* *When the assignments are collected, print outs of issues can
be made and then signed by the tutor and LRC staff - this will be a
record of all work received by us, from students for that assignment and
covers us if a tutor loses students work.
The records can stay on Autolib and be removed at the end of term or the
end of the year and the written receipts are a back up if Autolib goes
down.
There may be a few issues to iron out, but this should work quite well.
Ideally, we would need to set up the records for individual assignments
at the start of the term, so everything is ready to go when assignments
start coming in.
Thanks to Toby at SMUC who suggested the JISC Plagiarism Detection
software. Although it's really designed to detect plagiarism from online
resources, its interface doesn't necessary indicate this to students.

I hope all this is useful to any of you faced with taking in
assignments!
