As an IUG Steering Committee member who is about to complete the two-year
term I thoroughly endorse what Stuart says. I think it would be good for
the IUG to have more representation from outside north America. My fellow
SC members must be tired of me reminding them at regular interval that the
IUG is an international organisation, not all money is green, etc.
As a Steering Committee member you get your hotel accommodation paid (and
upgraded!), your IUG registration paid, and enjoy a lot of free meals
during the conference. So you really only need to pay your airfare to
attend IUG. SC members are expected to arrive two days before the
pre-conference day and stay until the last day of the conference, so you
may need to be away from the office for a whole week. Members at Large
(ordinary members) are also expected to attend SC meetings during ALA
Midwinter and receive a stipend which should at least cover the airfare.
Although it is possible to write in a name on the ballot, realistically it
may be a bit late to organise something for the coming year. We should
certainly be looking to nominate someone for the next year's election.
If you have any question about standing as a Steering Committee member or
as an officer, please get in touch with me. It's a lot of hard work but
also a lot of fun.

Are there any candidates at your respective institutions who are seeking election? If so we would be happy to know any names. If, for reasons of confidentiality, you wish to respond to me directly, rather than to the list, that is OK.
