Hi,
I see that ACS have changed their policy on the rolling backfile
(http://pubs.acs.org/pressrelease/pricing.html) and beginning in 2006 will
provide all their ACS Web Editions subscribers access to journal content
from 1996 onwards. This is welcome news and according to ACS is a "direct
outgrowth of our ongoing commitment to listen to our customers, enhance
their satisfaction and expand access to our content."
I am not aware that many other publishers have this "unpopular" rolling
backfile policy, but one that sticks in my mind is Sage Publications, which
introduced a rolling backfile policy for new institutional subscribers in
2005 (see http://www.sagepublications.com/FAQ_2005_Pricing.pdf). I have to
say I was horrified when this was announced and have reported my concerns to
Sage Publications re: the added complexity of managing changes in accessible
content from year to year for new Sage journal subscriptions.
Maybe Sage will now rethink its new rolling backfile policy in the light of
the ACS's abandonment of this unpopular policy?
Do others out there have similar concerns about Sage and any other
publishers who have adopted a rolling backfile policy?
Cheers
Lesley
