Happy new year to you all
Apologies for using this list for a personal matter, but I am rather
worried and I thought - if in doubt, ask a librarian! :-)
I am due to go the Gambia for a well deserved holiday, and have
been prescribed anti-malaria tablets called Doxycicline. I am very
nervous about taking these tablets due to the various, rather nasty,
side-effects that I have heard can occur when taking them. I have
asked my GP and other Doctors about setting my mind at rest, but so
far I have had a response that amounts to a "What do you prefer?
Malaria or harmful side effects", which is all well and good, but doesn't
really help.
So, have you or any of your collegues ever taken anit-malaria tablets?
And what were your experiences regarding the side-effects? I would be
paticularly interested to learn of anyone's experiences concerning
Doxycicline.
Unfortunately, I do not know of any friends or collegues who have
experience of these tablets, and so far have only heard of scare stories
regarding people who have gone on a course of anti-malaria tablets,
end up with severe depression or personality disorders and finally
committing suicide!!! I have also heard of liver complaints, skin
problems and people who still contract malaria despite the
prescautions.
As I say, apologies for using this list for an unrelated library topic, but
since finishing my PDR I am rather looking to my holiday, and I would
very much appreciate any advice that can ease the mind of a Very
Worried Librarian.
All the best.
Aaron
