Bill,
Darn, I didn't save our interesting exchanges. But I had the impression
you thought those scenes couldn't be sexy for an audience. If you have that
text left, could you refresh us?
That was my discussion point, the categorical statement about a human
experience that is actually all over the map, saying the movie wasn't
experienced in those ways, period.
>Would you now find Orange sexy?
It's been a while, but my memory, crystallizing around stills, is that
some of the bits of sex acts and curvy fixtures in the milk bar might be
sexy. More apposite might be that some people will definitely find some of
that sexy. See how that's different from asserting that no one could find
it sexy?
>Scholastics for me involves how three thousand years of philosophical questions
I meant scholastics to mean not opening the horse's mouth to count their
teeth. In this case, it would involve citing Adorno or Baudrillard or
Whomever to show that something isn't sexy, rather than, say, asking around.
Some of your very interesting assertions were at odds with what I thought
were facts. Again, I'm sorry I didn't keep your thoughtful posts.

the way to achieve maximum satisfaction.
Yes, yes, yes. I want a laundry list of effects from art. Eyeball
kicks; beauty; enlightenment; emotions, sometimes extreme, experienced in a
way that doesn't put me at risk of experiencing murder, matrimony, shunning,
etc.; reflected glamour; entertainment; common experiences with friends;
adventures; sexiness; pride of ownership (not such a big deal with film);
association with the artist(s).
The way I think and choose foci of thought is partly conditioned by
how I think I can get the most of these kicks. Of course it's also
conditioned by blood sugar, hormone levels, company, politics, air
conditioning.
In EWS, I can look forward to titillation and then at some point have
new thoughts during or after the orgy scene. Great!
Can I safely assume that you didn't have any sex thrills from the orgy
scene but you had the new thoughts? Half of this loaf is still a rich meal.
> ...EWS equivocates sexiness...
Yes again.
On a related note, I bet Kubrick thought, when he was planning that part
of the film, that he would have sex kicks planning it and shooting it and
that lots of people would find it sexy. Would you guess that too?
Thanks for having this wonderful conversation. What an internet luxury,
not having to wait to run into you in a coffee shop to enjoy this exchange!
Cordially,
