Yes, the image of shading the top of a notepad with a pencil to get the
imprint of what was on the previous page--that is a specifically cinematic
image, no?
Another addition: a short film called "Rain is Falling", about a young
Moroccan girl who tries to protect her sick mother from droplets of rain
coming from the leaky roof of their house, features a close-up of the girl
writing in her schoolbook, painstakingly forming each letter in pencil,
before the drops falling on the paper make doing homework impossible.
(I saw this at the Toronto Worldwide Short Film Festival, along with "Ryan",
the Canadian film which recently won the Oscar for best short. I admit it
has nothing to do with writing, but any opportunity to see this compact
little gem should be taken--absolutely breathtaking.)
