Tom Gunning has an article "In Your Face: Physiognomy, Photography, and
the Gnostic Mission of Early Film" that appeared in the journal
Modernism / Modernity in 1997. Lots of cog sci research and theory on
face perception would really be relevant to this. Vicki Bruce's work is
a good starting point if your interested in that sort of thing.
