Hello all,
this writing in film topic is almost endless and yes, of course, Godard is exemplary in adding this dimension as a meta-critique of the image, especially as found in propoganda and advertising, where often in his films the adverts deconstruct their own ideological underpinnings, the 'SS' in 'Esso' for example.
But as far as I know no one has mentioned, maybe my favourite film of all time, 'Letter From An Unknown Woman' By Olphus. Here writing is the mark of the body's desire. The letter being read is the dying thoughts of the woman condemned to love a man who can only love himself. Text as ghostly.
On A somewhat lighter note, In another play on the notion of the woman's inscription, we have Mankiewicz's 'Letter To Three Wives', a delightful confection on suburban heterosexual unease. Here we hear the woman's voice as she writes the letter but never meet her, she becomes the narrative voice, the slip of the tongue in this Freudian game of deciet. Well worth a mention.
