I am writing to you from the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies
(AIES), located on Kibbutz Ketura in the Southern Arava of Israel
(http://arava.org/). The Arava Institute is a regional center for
environmental leadership. By encouraging environmental cooperation between
peoples, the Arava Institute promotes peace and sustainable development on a
regional and global scale. Students in our academic program come from the
Middle East, North America and other parts of the world to study together.
Our courses are taught in English, and are designed for students planning to
pursue careers as environmental professionals or for those who have a
personal interest in the environment.
The Arava Institute's mission goes beyond training and teaching to include
research on a range of environmental matters and problems. Research is
divided into self-supporting centers that are headed by a faculty member
with teams of research fellows providing critical support in a number of
areas. One research initiative just getting underway is entitled The
Effectiveness of Environmental Education in Israel - An Empirical
Evaluation, funded jointly by the Israeli Ministry of the Environment and
the GM-UMIT Foundation. This study is headed by Dr. Alon Tal, our Director
of Research and he has two Master's candidates working with him. The study
is an empirical review of the effectiveness of Israeli environmental
educational programs in schools, specifically in the 6th and 12th grades.
In order to develop a questionnaire for the schools being surveyed, we are
looking for examples of questionnaires that evaluate the 'environmental
literacy' of the pupils. Can you make any suggestions who or what
organizations or institutions I could contact to ask for these?
Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Abby Lutman
