Hi John,
Good hear that you are involved with indicators... a quick response as
I am officially still on leave...
We have been asked by the Australian government, Department of
Environment and Heritage, to develop ESD indicators to
assess progress at the national level. It would be good to share notes
as our terms of reference are very similar.
We are also working with UNESCO (Asia-Pacific) on developing ESD
indicators for the region in collaboration with the UNESCO National
Commissions. We will shortly be pulling together a Key Informants Group
involving ESD and indicator experts from across the globe as part of
this project.
Will contact you again shortly with the details...would be great to
have you involved also.
Hope all is well with you.
Daniella

The UK Government's strategy for sustainable development, Securing
the Future, published in March 2005, uses a set of 68 indicators to
assess whether it is succeeding in its goals. Several of these
indicators are still to be developed, including indicator 48 which
will show "the impact of formal learning on knowledge and awareness
of sustainable development."
I have recently been contracted by the Sustainable Development
Commission (SDC), the Government's independent advisor on sustainable
development, to research existing practice with respect to indicators
of education for sustainable development (ESD); review and extend
current proposals on the form of a possible ESD indicator; and arrive
at proposals to government.
I would be grateful to hear from any list members who have worked on
the development of such indicators and/or have knowledge of their use
by local/national governments.
The focus of the indicator (the impact of formal learning on
knowledge and awareness of sustainable development) is already
determined and I would also welcome list members' views on what might
constitute a valid and reliable indicator.
Finally list members in the UK should be aware that the SDC is likely
to convene a small focus group to discuss my provisional findings
sometime in November. While I cannot guarantee invitations, I would
welcome expressions of interest in joining the group.
