Dear all,
apologies for cross-posting.
Morigenos - marine mammal research and conservation society from Slovenia
will be organizing Summer Dolphin Research Camps this summer.
We invite those interested to participate in research activities of
Morigenos and thus help carrying out our studies.
The project aims at investigating the population of bottlenose dolphins
inhabiting Slovenian Sea and the surrounding waters (northern Adriatic Sea).
The project is primarily collecting data on photo-identification, which
provides information on population size, distribution, abundance, home range
and movement patterns of bottlenose dolphins in the area.
Moreover, the project is collecting preliminary data on interactions between
dolphins and human activities, fisheries and traffic in particular.
The main objectives of the project are:
- to estimate the size of a bottlenose dolphin population, inhabiting
Slovenian sea and surrounding areas;
- to estimate the home range of the population;
- to assess population trends;
- to study habitat use;
- to study movement patterns;
- to study site fidelity;
- to study social structure;
- to study human impact on dolphins (fishery, traffic, pollution, etc.);
- to identify main negative factors affecting the dolphins in the area;
- to inform and educate the public and to raise public awareness;
- to recommend appropriate measures for dolphin conservation to management
bodies;
- to preserve natural treasures of our sea;
- to promote a precautious exploitation of marine environment;
- to promote sustainable development.

Research camps will be organized in July and August 2005 (5 stages), each
camp lasting 8 days. Number of participants is limited.
No experience is required to participate in the camp. The participants will
gain experience in research methods for studying bottlenose dolphins in the
wild. They will get insight into methods of photo-identification, collection
of data from land observation points and boats, and they will gain knowledge
in cetacean biology and conservation issues.
The participation fee is 170 EURO. This includes
- accommodation at the research center;
- food (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and beverages (not including alcohol);
- electricity, water, etc.
- transportations along the Slovenian coast during the camp (fuel for the
vehicle);
- boat trips (gasoline and oil) and other fieldwork expenses;
- lectures and training by the Morigenos team;
- guidance;
- visits of several cultural and natural monuments;
- personal injury insurance;
- certificate of attendance.
Participants must arrange their own transportation to and from the research
base.
Detailed information can be found on Morigenos' website (www.morigenos.org)

We hope to see some of you here!
Best regards,
