It's not just lists. It's small presses too. When I get something which
indicates that the author hasnt done any research, I send it back (if
there's an s.a.e.) with a standard letter which suggests that BUYING some
publications might be a good idea & that they might regard it as market
research i.e. testing what the press does instead of spending money on
wasted postage
Most of the time there is no reply to that; but a small percentage write
back up saying they can't afford it
I think it's the romance of sending off and also of collecting rejections;
as well of course as the fear of not polluting their genius by reading
anything
