Archive buildings in the UK: Progress and Problems

This event is aimed at all archivists who currently or in the future may
have to tackle the issues surrounding new building or archives
redevelopment projects. Chris Kitching will give his expert overview of
developments in this area, supported by case studies from the two regions.
An informative tour of the Borthwick Institute for Archives and a
discussion session will follow.
Note: North and North West Region AGM’s are being held at the Borthwick
Institute for Archives 10.30am – 12pm

1.00 Introduction – Chair of Regions
1.05 Chris Kitching will discuss his research towards Archive Buildings
in the UK 1993-2005 which is nearing completion. Chris will be giving his
observations on project funding, timetabling and the key trends and
developments in recent years. He will be looking at the major internal
and external influences on archive buildings and giving us his
observations on common problems and pitfalls.

2.00 Introduction to Case Studies - Chair of Regions
Each speaker will give a 20 minute presentation providing an overview of
their project (to date) with greater attention to one area of work.

Planning and Practicalities of a move
2.25 Case Study 2: Northumberland Archives Service (Sue Wood)
Running a limited service (how to keep people happy and ensure the needs
of the move are met)

Dealing with designers and builders
3.25 Tour of the Borthwick Institute for Archives (Chris Webb)
4.15 Questions: A chance for attendees to discuss the issues raised on
the day and reflect on the Borthwick building
