Head of Biometrics Ref: SC/RS/01/005
General: The Africa-based, globally networked International Livestock
Research Institute (ILRI) helps reduce poverty, hunger and environmental
degradation by enhancing animal agriculture in developing countries. ILRI
positions its work at the dynamic interface of poverty alleviation and
sustainable livestock livelihoods. Our staff works in partnerships and
alliances with hundreds of organisations in developed and developing
countries, including some of the finest universities and research
institutions in the world. ILRI’s headquarters are in Nairobi, Kenya, with
a second principal campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Our staff is also based
in 7 partner institutions in other parts of Africa and in Asia and Latin
America. We employ more than 700 staff from about 40 countries and are one
of 15 centres around the world sponsored by the Consultative Group on
International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
The position: ILRI is looking for an imaginative and dynamic person who can
help it maintain and enhance its position as leader in quality livestock
research for development. We believe an experienced biometrician with a
breadth and interest in applied science can fill this role. He/she would
help the institute use best practice in research design, implementation and
analysis, and devise ways of helping partner institutions meet the same
high standards. Head of Biometrics is an important position whose role cuts
across the entire research program of the institute..
Location: The position will be based at the ILRI campus in Nairobi.
The successful candidate will have:
· Advanced degree in statistics (PhD preferred) and experience in the
application of statistical methods in agricultural research. Experience
with livestock research will be an added advantage.
· Experience in interpretation and presentation of data results
· Ability to mentor and to develop and implement training programs.
· Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to maintain strong
networks with other researchers and research support staff
· Capacity to identify and respond to changing needs including
innovative approaches to work.
· Strong management organization skills ,ability to effectively lead
and manage people from diverse backgrounds and disciplines
· Experience in fund raising and maintaining partners and donor
relations.
· Established links / networks with colleagues in institutions in
developed and developing countries
Terms of appointment: Initial appointment is for three years with the
possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the
availability of funding. ILRI offers a competitive remuneration package
paid in US dollars.
