This interesting article describes the consequences of treating a
patient with uric acid of 0.51 mmol/L with a uric acid lowering agent as
a preventative measure, and the adverse consequences which followed.
Text books ( William Marshall - fourth edition, page 257 ) suggest risk
of developing gout becomes quite significant above 0.54 mmol/L, although
it is acknowledged that many people tolerate high uric acid levels and
remain asymptomatic. Bearing in mind the low solubility of uric acid, I
am wondering if there is a uric acid concentration at which the medical
members on this list would consider intervention with uric acid lowering
agents appropriate if clinical symptoms of gout had not yet developed.
I would be happy to send a summary of answers to the list if I receive
any direct replies.
