Dear colleagues,
A reminder to colleagues going to Glasgow that the last few seats are
available for what promises to be one of the most important and
stimulating luncheon round table sessions at EuroMedlab.
Autoidentification technology is ubiquitous in commercial processes,
but misidentification of patients continues to cause adverse clinical
incidents. The National Patient Safety Agency has identified this as
one of the major avoidable sources of risk to patients. Within
laboratories we routinely use barcodes on specimens and reagents.
Many hospitals are now using barcodes to identify patients, most commonly on wristbands. These can be used in the request-report cycle for
Laboratory Medicine and radiology, for Point of Care Testing, for transfusion, for medicines management and for administrative tasks.
The Round Table will explore the uses of autoidentification and share experiences.
"Autoidentification of Patients" will be led by Jonathan Kay, (John Radcliffe Hospitals, Oxford, UK) and Chris Royle, (Royal Brompton Hospital, London, UK.).
