We have also observed weak positive POCT urine hCG results with Basildon Tap
Water. Is this also related to Essex girls? The observation was noted when
one of the POCT sites rang to say that they suspected a false positive
result and so did what they thought was good quality control and tried the
tap water.

The major source or problems is user error, whether as
POCT or unfortunately, in the lab too.
I was contacted by a GP livid that a patient for
RoAccutane treatment had been sent home following a
positive urine hCG test, and had tested negative in
his surgery later that day. The urine sample (labelled
for once!) was recovered and checked and was still
found positive. The GP confirmed that the urine hCG
kit he was using was a high sensitivity kit, and said
the patient had not passed a very dilute urine. "mind
you, she only passed a few drops so I added an equal
volume of water to get enough".
I have found errors occurring due to very poor
lighting in sluice rooms where the nurses could not
see the very faint line of early gestation; where
nurses thought that 30 seconds was sufficient time to
allow; where a nurse thought that the patient test
line had to be the same intensity as the control line
etc. False negatives due to user error are more common
than we suspect I fear.
