Dear Colleagues
What "normal" range(s) do you quote (if at all)for random
plasma glucoses (whether they are assayed on their own or as
part of a profile) and why? Alternatively,do you only rely on
appropriate comments? In particular,we are concerned with the
balancing act between not invoking unnecessary GTTs but at
the same time not missing undiagnosed DM in patients for whom
the glucose may be an opportunistic finding depending ,of
course on whether (unknown to us) the patient is really
fasting. It would be clear that the upper values of
6.1,7.0,7.8 and 11.1 mmol/l all have their merits and
demerits (cf WHO guidelines).I bet there is not a universal
answer.
