Dear All
We have an 83 yr old gentleman admitted with pain and weakness in his left
thigh. Catheterised on admission and found to have brightly coloured
blue/purple urine (producing 800ml over 7hours).
Prev Hx of stroke and Ca prostate (TURP many years ago, lost to follow-up).
Unable to feed himself, no herbal medications. Medications on admission -
aspirin, persantin and lorazepam.
Urine pH >9, urine protein 1.3g/l, microscopy showed 'amorphous sediment and
crystals', probable UTI. Centrifugation yielded a dark orange/brown
supernatant and a grey precipitate with a dark blue ring on top of the
precipitate.
Any clues please to the blue/purple colouration?
