ACB Executive have asked me to alert UK members that the DH has this
morning publised an important new document entitled -
Modernising Pathology: Building a Service Responsive to Patients
This outlines the establishment of -
"a new Pathology Service Review Panel, chaired by Lord Carter of Coles,
will be set up by the Department of Health with two members bringing:
• specialist technical and clinical knowledge of pathology
• knowledge of the commercial aspects of pathology/health services.
4.3 Its terms of reference will be:
To advise Ministers, in the context of current resource constraints, on the
timeliness, reliability, capacity and efficiency of current pathology
services in
England, benchmarked against international standards and the feasibility
of and efficiency benefits arising from wide-scale service reconfiguration,
innovation and modernisation and involvement of the independent sector.
4.4 The review panel will make recommendations to Ministers in spring
2006 and will undertake its work by:
• reviewing evidence from the professional, clinical, managerial,
economic and commercial literature
• holding meetings and workshops with key players including
patients and their carers
• visiting a range of pathology services."
