CALL FOR PAPERS
The Soul of Empire:
Visualising Religion in Early Modern Spain and the New World
A two day conference to be held at the
National Gallery and King’s College London.
Friday 3rd of November & Saturday 4th November 2006
Organisers: Kathy Adler, Marta Bustillo, Jeremy Roe, Julian Weiss
& ARTES Iberian and Latin American Visual Culture Group
The conference accompanies the National Gallery’s exhibition of paintings
by Velázquez and one afternoon, organised by the National Gallery, will be
dedicated to lectures on Velázquez’s paintings followed by a private view
of the exhibition.
To frame the study of this celebrated master, the other sessions of the
conference focus on religion as a means to explore the social, ideological
and cultural complexities of visual culture in an age of imperial
expansion. As well as shifting attention to the wider historical period of
c. 1500-1700, the conference examines a broader range of visual arts
beyond painting, such as sculpture, architecture, costume, the book arts
or tapestries.
Our aim is to create a forum for scholars whose work draws on an
interdisciplinary archive and a range of critical methodologies to the
cultural analysis of the visual. In addition to an interest in a range of
artistic media, we also welcome papers that address a variety of textual
sources and genres. The analysis of the relationships between texts and
images offers opportunities to re-think the significance of artworks
outside of their modern museological context, and examine their role as
performative and ideological ‘spaces’.
Themes for papers may include: the devotional, social and political
dimensions of religious art; re-thinking the religious image and its
spectators; the visual sermon; religious imagery in text; the religious
spectacle in funerals, pageants and drama; music and the image.
Each paper will be twenty minutes in length. We aim to publish the
proceedings of the conference.
