Industrial Design Search
The Division of Design in the School of Art at the University of Washington in Seattle invites
applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor of Industrial Design,
starting September 2006. The UWID program is a human-centered Industrial Design program with
a strong practice-oriented and process-centered approach that builds relationships by working
with faculty in numerous departments at the University of Washington who are exploring emerging
technologies. The UWID program enjoys rich connections with a vibrant Seattle design community
with active participation from companies such as Microsoft, RESOLUTE, Fluke, IDEO, Teague, and
Stratos.
Our nationally recognized Design program seeks applications for a designer/educator who is
expected to teach at all levels of the curriculum. The candidate must have an ability to collaborate
effectively across disciplines such as Visual Communication Design, Interaction Design,
Engineering, Business, and the Social Sciences. Candidates are expected to be innovators who are
open to experimentation and who will contribute to reinvigorating the ID graduate program.
A Masters degree in Design or an allied field is required, as well as a minimum of three years
professional practice or teaching. The ability to teach 3-D computer-aided design is essential. The
ideal candidate combines experience in the application of design techniques such as drawing,
modelmaking, and prototyping with an understanding of design methodology, design history,
design research and writing.
