Dear Lubomir, Klaus and Gunnar
Firstly: happy New Year to all our readers!
Secondly: I would like to disagree with Lubomir and comment on the
different positions of Klaus and Gunnar. I regard it as a great strength of
this list that is DOES contain a wide range of designers, artists and
others. My experience of such communities is that they do not talk to one
another often enough. The list is a rare forum for such discussion.
However, Lubomir is right when he reminds us that addressing this mixed
audience is difficult and often produces surprising results.
The "disagreement" between Gunnar and Klaus is useful for both of the
communities that they represent. It is good for the semanticists to be
reminded of the world in which practitioners manipulate the materials of
the world without linguistic mediation ["or so they mistakenly think", as
the semanticists would add]. It is also good for the practitioners to be
reminded of the world in which semanticists claim that language is
instrumental in our perception of the world ["or so they mistakenly think",
as the practitioners would add].
The world is quite large enough to support both communities, and more
besides. Let us celebrate plurality rather than deciding that difficult
communication is a waste of time.
