I mean we need to bench mark against other types of professions and posts, and then we have a good measure of the value of the posts in the library sector.

Do we equate with trainee accountants, solicitors, legal clerks in the magistrates courts, civil servants etc?

Well, there are the salary guides. Not sure whether the post in question is govt or special, but:

From http://www.cilip.org.uk/jobscareers/salaryguides/gsg.htm
Librarian £23,690 - £32,960
"The level of responsibility at this grade is commensurate with the skills and expertise acquired by those who have gained full professional qualifications ie a Chartered Librarian"

Or from http://www.cilip.org.uk/jobscareers/salaryguides/slss.htm March 2003 "Librarians/Information professionals with experience and working within the unit £21,558 - £33,532 "
and "These salary bands do not take into account special allowances such as London Weighting"

So, allowing for inflation and weighting, it looks like a minimum shortfall of well over £7K, or at least 30% less...

Good point

As I said last year, we really do need a Bench Marking exercise for library sector posts, and a list of equivalents, bands, comparisons etc Data is collected each year about what members earn, but as far as I know there are no bench marks of what a specific post equates to, f

Um. So how much do we suggest the British Museum Library _should_ have been advertised at? And/Or which Grade should it be on?

With all due respect I think we are arguing about a symptom not a cause.

Librarians are offered rubbish salaries because very few people understand what they do or the contributions they make.

I understand that there are government contributions to attract various key workers like teachers, healthcare staff etc. to apply for jobs not so librarians, even though those of us in the public and academic realms contribute significantly to the government agenda on these issues. (And those in private industry probably to the profits!) That isn't an answer to poor salaries but it would help.

Try offering head teachers or nurses that sort of salary and watch the newspaper headlines about poor educational standards or patients in corridors. But remember we are just a set of mousy individuals who stamp books and say shush ; so why should we be worth as much as a nurse?

If CILIP wants to make a difference it should be aggressively marketing the profession. That is not acting as a trade union; it is acting as an advocate for the profession. If it does this the rest will follow; if it doesn t - I should go and retrain as something else because the profession won t exist in twenty years!
