Excellent points Joanne, and we really must sort out the whole. Cilip must lead on this, and not in the background but let people know what they are doing.

Dear all
I have been watching this debate with interest, as someone who has recently submitted their application for chartership. Also as someone married to an accountant. When my husband started his trainee accountant post he was earning £13,500, in 1998. In 1999 his firm re-evaluated salaries and he was automatically earning £18,000. When he passed his first year exams he was automatically put up to £20,000, when the second year exams finished he was on £22,000 and upon qualifying (3 yr training
period) his salary rose to £30,000, this has continued to rise as he has progressed throughout his career. This is very common within the accountancy profession as I'm sure some of us will realise. There is no question of a CCAB qualified accountant working for less that the qualified salary, which does range between firms and bodies, however this is still above £27,000 for qualified staff... This is the same for chartered Health and Safety execs, engineers etc... all who take part in professional development, as we do.
I thoroughly agree with Frances, there has to be a benchmark which brings us in at a level, I have recently left a health post to take up a post within a school I actually took a wage cut because my circumstances were changing, although in the long term with incremental rises I will be in a more prosperous position. My old post was recently advertised, not on cilip but on S1JOBS (it was cheaper for my employer) at £16k which was considerably less than what I was on, I just feel for the successful candidate, who no doubt had NO CHOICE! However these jobs are still advertised whether through CILIP or not, and if many fellow professionals are not renewing their subscriptions as a result of this, what about the other press / websites who advertised these posts? The whole has to be looked at rather than the part.
Many thanks for allowing me to rant!
Best wishes
Joanne
