Plus at the other end of the spectrum the growing number of under 16s
on courses. We now have pushing 300 students under 16 on either
mainstream or discrete courses, and trying to fit them in with the HE
students proves problematic and can only get worse.

Hi Priscilla
One thing to throw into the pot is the blurring of distinction between
FE and HE, following our experience at Reading College, which has now
merged with Thames Valley University. Though perhaps not a widespread
experience, I think there are likely to be more mergers or partnerships
of this kind, where FE students are "groomed" for entry into HE, opening
up a route for them that might not previously have been feasible.
Issues to discuss for LRCs include the different (and sometimes
incompatible) needs/expectations of FE and HE students, and the need for
the LRC in such an institution to accommodate these successfully. To put
it bluntly, how do you cater for both research students and a group of
bricklayers in the same environment (with all its likely restrictions on
space, funding and facilities), and keep both sets of students happy?
Regards
