Seismologist The International Seismological Centre (ISC) seeks a
seismologist to help edit and analyse the hypocentral solutions and station
observations published in the Bulletin of the ISC.
The suitable candidate should hold an academic degree in the geosciences,
preferably seismology. The candidate must be able to demonstrate
experience in seismological bulletin analysis, as well as familiarity with
the UNIX operating system and programming.
The ISC is an international non-governmental organization located in
Thatcham, United Kingdom, within 25 km west of Reading, about 100 km west
of London and about 50 km south of Oxford. ISC is affiliated with the
Earth Sciences Dept. of Oxford University and is supported by more than 50
establishments worldwide.
The ISC is the hub of a global effort to receive seismic records, analyse
the data and publish a definitive collection of world earthquakes. The
successful candidate will contribute to the mission of ISC by assisting in
the daily careful analysis of parametric data and the hypocentral locations
contributed to ISC by more than a hundred seismological agencies around the
world, comprising parametric data from over 3,000 seismic stations. (Note
that ISC seismologists currently do not analyse waveform data.) The
seismological analysis and bulletin editing is usually performed by 2-3
seismologists, including our Senior Seismologist, who will also provide
extensive training and supervision.
We should emphasise that ISC is not a research institution and the position
requires full-time attention to seismic analysis and editing of the
Bulletin. However, ISC seismologists are frequently involved in
investigating ways in which to improve and enhance ISC operations and in
turn improve our service global seismological community.
The position is for 2 years initially but with the possibility of an
extension. The salary is based on UK Academic Scales and will be between
£20,000- £25,000 per annum (gross salary) depending on qualifications and
experience. We shall provide assistance with expenses for travel and
establishing accommodation.
To apply, please send your Curriculum Vitae with the names and addresses of
two or three referees. Your C.V. should describe primarily your experience
in regional and global observational seismology and local/regional
seismological analysis, and also your familiarity with computers, including
any scripting or programming experience.
We shall accept applications by regular post (International Seismological
Centre, Pipers Lane, Thatcham, Berkshire, RG19 4NS, United Kingdom) or by e-
mail ([log in to unmask]) in plain text or Word document. We plan to review
the applications as soon as they arrive and until the position is filled.
