I've belonged to this salon for a little over a year now, mostly passively reading what others contribute. I am a budding filmmaker with an interest in philosophy, though not explicitely "philosophical" films. My tastes tend to fall within the realms of commercial cinema.
So much for my setup, now for the question: what is the purpose of this group? Is this an exercise in philosophy or an exercise in film? Is there a hope or expectation that this group will influence the future of filmmaking? Commercial filmmaking? As a filmmaker, should I expect to find my own work inspired by these discussions or only my mind? Does what Deleuze has to say about the space-time continuum matter to contemporary makers of thoughtful, intelligent commercial films (i.e. Scorcese, Eastwood, etc... [I'd add Richard Linklater but he may be too easy to answer for])? To the normal human being, what does our discussion within this salon matter?
I'd appreciate your thoughtful consideration of this question. Thank you.
brock.
